What to expect at your first physical therapy visit
A plain-language guide to a first physical therapy appointment: what to bring, what the therapist will ask, and how a treatment plan comes together.
Before you arrive
Call the office ahead of time with any questions. If you have a referral, imaging reports, or a list of medications, bring them along. Wear clothing that lets you move comfortably and gives the therapist access to the area being treated.
It helps to think about when your symptoms started, what makes them better or worse, and which everyday activities have become harder.
The conversation
A first visit usually begins with questions about your history, your symptoms, and your goals. Goals can be simple — sleeping through the night, carrying groceries, getting back to a sport.
The assessment
The therapist will typically look at how you move: range of motion, strength, posture, balance, and how the painful area responds to touch and movement. Tell them if anything is uncomfortable.
Building a plan
At Back on Track, each treatment plan is based on the individual patient’s needs. Treatment can combine manual techniques with traditional and alternative approaches, and patients are given a home treatment plan with exercise and activities they can use in everyday life.
Ask how often you will be seen and what you should practice at home between visits.
